Oversea Over heels
Pumpkin was pioneer. That's Pumpkin the Kitten, my 2nd picture book. One day I received a call from the distinguished Dr. Margia Beshara, head of The Center of Literature for the Arab Child in Israel. He told me my book was chosen, alongside 2 other books (one by David Grossman and the other by Shira Gefen), to be translated into Arabic that year. Very good company, indeed! Needless to say, I was tremendously moved by the possibility that Arab children will bebome acquainted with my work, the long lasting animosity between Jews and Arabs in the region ails me. Maybe bilateral reading of children's books will help us all feel the other side's humanity?
When he sent me the translation draft, I was baffled to have learnt he changed the name of the cat to Moomoo. When I carefully inquired him about it, Dr. Beshara told me Moomoo was a common name for cats in Arabic, like "Tiger" or "Leo". He went on and explained that in Arabic, "pumpkin" (Gar'ah) is slang for a baldhead…
Needless to say we agreed on Moomoo.
Big in Japan, lion in China
And then King Leo Retires roared in Chinese. Credit's due to illustrator Liora Grossmman, who did the art on my book Cockatoo Hairdo and at the time headed the Israeli exhibition in the annual children's book fair in Bologna. Luckily, some gentlemen from Fujian Sci&Tech publishing house in China liked my book and my lovely agents from Assia, Vered and Merav, took care of the rest.
Meanwhile, Cockatoo Hairdo came out in French, German and Hebrew, all in the same week. Credit's due to Mrs. Rita Gans of The Kiryat Ya'arim Youth Village friendship Foundation in Switzerland, which funded this publication.
About that time, Dr. Satoko Kamoshida, a Japanese expert of Yiddish and Hebrew, read my 2nd YA novel, Anti and decided to translate it in whole, with no guarantee of a publisher! I was amazed, but my agents at The Israeli Institute for Hebrew Literature told me it's pretty common in Japan. Still, it felt like a huge vote of confidence and the outcome was spectacular. Satoko and I are still good friends, she even stayed at our place during one of her visits, unfortunately on a night Japan lost a match in the world soccer cup.
2 books in the USA
Going into the US market has always been the literary holy grail. I was happy to have acheived that with both books, via my agents at Assia lit. agency, as Geffen Publishers US published the American editions of Pumpkin the Kitten and A Night at the Playground. I hear the books have been well recieved and some say the English translations (which I have worked very hard on with my American co-translator and editor Kezia Raphael Prize, top the original.
I hope to reach many more children, YA and adults in many more countries, speaking many more languages, some of them even weirder than Hebrew.
התרגשותיישן.
החלוץ היה החתול. החתול דלעת. יום אחד קיבלתי טלפון מאיש נחמד ושמו ד"ר מרג'יה בשראה, מנהל המרכז לספרות הילד הערבי בישראל. הוא בישר לי שמדי שנה המרכז בוחר 3 ספרים לתרגום, ולשמחתי בחרו בחתול שלי לצד ספר של דויד גרוסמן וספר נוסף של שירה גפן. חֶברה טובה בהחלט! מובן שהתרגשתי מאד מהאפשרות שילדים ערביים יחשפו לעבודתי, העוינות האזורית הקטלנית וחוצת המאות מצערת אותי, ואולי קריאה הדדית של ספרות הילדים תעזור לנו להרגיש את אנושיותו של הצד האחר?
כששלח לי את התרגום במייל, גיליתי שלחתול הוא קרא "מומו" וזה נראה לי מוזר. התקשרתי ושאלתי אם "מומו" הוא דלעת בערבית. התשובה הייתה שלילית, מומו הוא שם נפוץ לחתולים בערבית, משהו כמו "מיצי" אצלנו. כשהתעקשתי שיקראו לו דלעת, ענה לי שבערבית דלעת היא "גרעא". המילה הייתה מוכרת לי: בירושלים של ילדותי, כשהתגלו אצל מישהו כינים, היו עושים לו קרחת וכולם היו לועגים לו שהוא "אבו-גרעא". אתה רוצה שיקראו לספר "החתול קרחת משנה את הדעת"? – שאל אותי הד"ר הנכבד.
לא, השבתי בהכנעה, מומו זה שם מצוין.
הפלישה לסין, גדול ביפן
אחרי דלעת, הגיע תורם של המלך אהרל'ה פורש, שתורגם לסינית. המאיירת המעולה ליאורה גרוסמן, שעבדה בדיוק על ספרי גוזלים בראש, הפיקה במקביל את הביתן הישראלי ביריד ספרי הילדים השנתי בבולוניה. הכול קרה ברגע האחרון, יומיים או שלושה לפני הטיסה ולשמחתי המפיק שלה, דייב, גר כמה רחובות ממני והצלחתי להעביר אליו את כל החומרים על הקשקש.
אבל התהליך עם הסינים (שנוהל על ידי הסוכנות שלי מרב וורד ב"אסיה"), ארך מספיק זמן כדי שליאורה תסיים את העבודה על "גוזלים". הוא הופיע במקביל למקור העברי גם בצרפתית ובגרמנית, ביוזמת אגודת הידידים של כפר הנוער קריית יערים, שווייץ, בהפקת גב' ריטה גנץ.
בערך באותה תקופה, אשה יקרה ושמה ד"ר סאטוקו קומושידה, מומחית יפנית ליידיש ועברית, קראה את אנטי, הרומן השני שלי למבוגרים. היא תרגמה את הספר בשלמותו, עוד לפני שידעה אם יש או אין לה מו"ל! זה הדהים אותי, אך במכון לתרגום ספרות עברית שייצג את הספר, אמרו שביפן זה עניין די שגור. הספר נראה נפלא, וסאטוקו ואני חברים עד היום. היא אפילו התארחה אצלנו באחד מביקוריה בארץ, לצערי בערב שבו יפן הפסידה משחק במונדיאל.
אמריקנו כפול
הכניסה לשוק האמריקני הייתה ונותרה הגביע הקדוש של עולם הספרות. לשמחתי, שניים מספרי הילדים שלי הצליחו להשיג זאת, בזכות הסוכנות שלי ורד ומרב מ"אסיה", והחתול דלעת משנה את הדעת (Pumpkin the Kitten) ולילה בגינה (A Night at the Playground) הודפסו בהוצאת Gefen. אני שומע שהם התקבלו בסבר פנים יפה ויש שכבר אמרו שהתרגום עולה על המקור… כמובן, אני מקווה להמשיך ולהגיע לעוד מדינות ולעוד ילדים וילדות, שדוברים בשפות שונות ומשונות אפילו יותר מעברית.
